If you have someone sitting on the fence on whether to kill someone or not, what better way to make your case than good old fashion scripture? That’s what the jury foreman used in the Texas case of Jimmie Lucero.
Jimmie Lucero was convicted of murdering 71-year-old Pedro Robledo, his 72-year-old wife, Maria, and their daughter, Fabiana, 31. During diliberation there were two hold-out jurors. According to testimony the forman in the case read from Romans 13:1-6, which states that everyone must submit to authority and that those who do wrong should be afraid, for a ruler is “God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment to the wrongdoer.”
After five hours the two-hold out jurors switched their votes and Lucero was sentenced to death.
Lucero’s defense attorney’s argued that their clients rights had been violated. However, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals found the introduction of the Bible into the jury room to be “harmless error.”
The Supreme Court by its refusal to hear the case either agreed with the lower courts ruling or didn’t feel that there was enough evidence to overturn it.
Either way in these turbulent times the sway of the world seems to moving more toward religion as a way to govern than that of the rule of law. In that case, Constitution what Constitution?
